    Iron Bridge

    It is being reported that work has restarted on the iron bridge, linking the road between Divarata and Assos, overlooking Myrtos Bay, that was assembled in December is expected to be completed by the end of March.

    Coastal Road to Fiscardo

    It is being reported that the financial issues with the contractor, carrying out the work on the damaged road overlooking Myrtos bay, have been resolved and the road will be opened, when a new bridge will be put in place, before the start of the new tourist season in 2017.

    The Devosetou Bridge

    After months, not mention years, of being under repair, the De Bosset Bridge was brought back to life this afternoon when the lights, stretching across the bridge, were lit up as part of its final preparations before being opened to the public.

    The Devosetou Bridge

    A large part of the Devosetou Bridge (aka English Bridge), which was built in 1831, collapsed into the lagoon in 2011. It is now being reported that it is in its final stages of repair and is soon to be handed over to the Ministry of Culture, to be reopened to the public

    New Arrival ( Ferry )

    A new ferry, the Vikentios D (Vincent Damodos ) arrived in Argostoli on Sunday 20th December, where it was welcomed by everyone. The new ferry, with upgraded interior, will carry out a daily service between Lixouri and Argostoli.

    Celebratiing 70 years of the United Nations

    On Saturday, October 24, 2015, The Mayor of Kefalonia, k.Alexandros Parisis, switched on a special blue light to illuminate the historic obelisk on the De Bosset bridge in Argostoli, participating in the international celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Organization.

    Painting Exhibition

    Greek Australian Artist, Neil Evans, who has been living in Kefalonia since 1996 is holding an exhibition of his work in Fiscardo, from the 9th to 30th August. Neil has held exhibitions in Zimbabwe, Australia and Greece.

    International Gymnastics Festival

    27th International Festival “Anna Pollatou”, “Gymnastics for All” will be taking place in Argostoli, Lixouri and Kourkoumelata this weekend. Approximately 2000 participants will take part in this International Gymnastics Festival, which will be televised by ERT–1, is dedicated to Anna Pollatou, a Greek Gymnastic who sadly passed away.

    Thanks to the Generosity of HALYPS

    Thanks to the generosity of Halyps Building Materials S.A, one of their subsidiary companies, Halyps Cement, delivered 50 tonnes of cement to Argostoli this morning. The cement will go towards restoring some of the building damaged during recent earthquakes. This is not the first time that HALYPS has shown their kindness to Kefalonia in this way.

    Earthquake Hit Kefalonia

    An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale hit Kefalonia on Monday morning. The 5km-deep quake struck in the sea northwest of Argostoli at 9:20 a.m. local time (7:20 a.m. GMT). There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

    Fourth Earthquake Hit Kefalonia

    A fourth earthquake, in just over a week, measuring 4 on the Richter scale, hit Kefalonia this morning at 8:31am local time, according to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens. The centre on the tremor, which was near to Myrtos, had a local depth of 5km. No casualties or damage was reported.

    Two New Earthquakes Hit Kefalonia

    According to the Geodynamic Institute, two new strong earthquakes shook Kefalonia this morning. The first one, which struck Faraklata, 4km northeast of Argostoli, at 9:41, measured 4.6 on the Richter scale and the second, which measured 3.6 on the Richter scale struck Pailki at 9:53 local time. No causalities or damage was reported

    4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Kefalonia

    A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Kefalonia on Thursday 5th November, the country′s earthquake observatory announced, with no reports of injuries or major damages. The tremor struck at 2:22 pm., with its epicenter at 11 kilometers southwest of Argostoli and 199 kilometers west of Patras, according to the observatory.

    Free Internet, Hot Spots, in Kefalonia

    The Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, has announced that Kefalonia will have hot spots on the island providing free internet access, the hot spots should be available in mid 2015. Each point will be able to serve about 40-50 simultaneous users who will have access to the Internet, but with restrictions for inappropriate content and streaming files, etc.

    EU announces 3.7 million euro aid for Kefalonia

    A proposal, which will need to be approved by the European Parliament and the European Council, for special funding of 3.7 million euros for Kefalonia following a 5.8 Richter scale earthquake and a series of aftershocks in early 2014, was announced on Wednesday by the European Union Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn..

    Increase in Arrivals During July

    Figures recently released by the Kefalonia Airport show an increase of 16% in passenger in July 2014, compared with the same month of 2013. During July, a total of 52491 flew in to Kefalonia compared with 44879 in July 2013. The report indicates that there was an increase in tourists from the UK and Italy, whilst there was a downturn in tourists from Austria and Russia.

    Repairs on Kefalonia are progressing well

    The repairs being carried out to school buildings, as well as damaged roads and other infrastructure, particularly the port of Lixouri, which was hit hard by two earthquakes earlier this year, are progressing at a satisfactory pace. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis told a parliamentary committee Tuesday.

    Repair Work to Damaged Roads Gets Go-Ahead

    Infrastructure Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis gave the go-ahead for €9.5 million Euros to be spent on repairing road between the island`s capital, Argostoli, and the town of Lixouri caused by the recent earthquakes.The minister has also agreed to spend another €3.7 million Euros on repair work at Lixouri`s harbour and at a marina in Legatata

    The Castle of St. George opens its doors to visitors

    Thanks to Direct intervention of the Culture Minister, Mr Panos Panagiotopoulos, the Castle of St. George, which dates back to the 16th century, is now open and ready for the tourist season.The castle of St. George had remained closed to the public since part of the wall near the gate collapsed, during the recent earthquakes.

    Greek Ship Owner Thanked For His Kindness

    Mr Alexander Paris, the Mayor, has written to Mr Restis, the Greek owner of the cruise ship Aegean Paradise, to thank him on behalf of the residents of Kefalonia for providing free accommodation and food for those who were made homeless as a result of the recent earthquakes.

    The Repair Work is Underway

    Shark 4m Long Landed in Sami

    A Thresher shark, measuring 4 meters long and weighing over 250 pounds was recently caught in the straights between Ithaca and Sami. It is believed that this is the first time that this species of shark has been seen in these waters.

    New Access Road for the Hospital

    Work is underway at the Mantzavinateio hospital in Lixouri to create a second entrance. With the help of the army the hospital will have a new entrance created from the side of the hospital leading to the beach, allowing for easier access not only for visitors and vehicles carrying supplies but for the evacuation of patients, should the need arise.
